Description: The New England Chapter of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A. is pleased to have Fred Haber, Vice President and General Counsel of Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. present at this meeting. After more than 20 years solely in the business of collective and centralized copyright licensing, CCC has in the past few years begun to branch out in order to further its mission of encouraging copyright compliance through education and the development of services and tools for the use of users and copyright holders. Fred, who has previously discussed CCC's core programs with our Chapter, will discuss its recent developments -- including services for rights holders, services for users, and new services to address orphan works and user-generated content -- and some of its plans for the future.

Title: "Old Media" to New Media: Business Opportunities and Copyright Issues
Location: Suffolk University Law School, 120 Tremont Street, Boston, MA, First Floor
Description: We are pleased to have Rebecca Sanhueza and Greg Barlow, of Time, Inc., who will share with us their experiences on transforming television series and magazine content into web based products. Greg will explain the business model for Time websites designed to enhance "old media" properties, and discuss ways to monetize (or attempt to monetize) these sites. Rebecca, who is Assistant General Counsel of Time, Inc., will discuss copyright, as well as contractual and publicity rights issues, that are triggered in moving old media to new. Greg and Rebecca will offer case histories that illustrate some of the legal wrangling that occurs when attempting to populate websites with existing (old) media content.

Description: Jay Fialkov, Deputy General Counsel at WGBH, will discuss provisions of copyright law relating to educational and public broadcasting uses of copyrighted content. WGBH collaborated with Berkman Center on a study of whether these provisions still serve their intended purpose in a digital world. Jay will discuss the study and whether there needs to be revisions of the law to reflect the changing methods of delivering content.
