Title: Copyright and Technology: Legal, Political and Market Challenges – An Assessment from WIPO
Location: Lexus Club at the Pepsi Center
Description: Richard Owens, a Director at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), will address international approaches to the copyright challenges posed by digital technology. Digital technologies are a two-edged sword for authors, publishers, and copyright holders generally. While they offer new possibilities to reach consumers with legitimate product offerings, they also enable infringement on a previously unheard-of scale. A mix of legal, political, and market challenges are being addressed. On the legal side, implementation of the 1996 WIPO treaties (WCT, WPPT) is proceeding, with the European Copyright Directive 2001 and the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) as prototypes. Work is also underway in a number of countries and regions to ensure that the balance between the protection of rights and the public interest in access to information and knowledge is maintained. Mr. Owens will examine different forces at work on at both the political and market levels, in addition to offering a range of related insights.
