PAST EVENTS Date: March 21, 2008 Title: International Copyright and Technology Issues: Legal, Political and Market Challenges -- WIPO Speaks Location: 171 17th Street NE, Suite 2100, Atlanta, GA 30363 Description: Digital technologies and their impact on “international” copyright issues are being met by a mix of legal, political and market responses. On the legal side, more than 60 countries have implemented the 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization treaties. Implementation of the treaties is part and parcel of more than 300 free trade agreements either completed or under negotiation with the United States, Japan and/or the European Union. On a political level, the WIPO Development Agenda is aimed at injecting a “development dimension” in all of WIPO’s activities. In the market sphere, new means of digital content delivery and licensing is exploding. User-generated and collaborative models (YouTube, MySpace, Second Life), and open licensing models like Creative Commons and the GNU Public License for open-source software, are complementing the growth of legal download services like iTunes and new digital license offerings from collecting societies. The program will address these developments from the perspective of the WIPO in Geneva.
