Music Licensing 101   



An overview of the different licenses needed for commercial use of music, the mechanisms for obtaining those licenses, and the rate courts that oversee compulsory licensing. The speakers will also address recent events that are impacting the music licensing landscape, including legislative initiatives and recent rate court rulings.   


Kenneth Steinthal specializes in litigating matters in the intellectual property/media sector. His practice is focused on copyright, DMCA and antitrust/rate-setting cases involving the distribution of audio and audiovisual content, and includes counseling companies regarding the licensing implications of their product offerings. Ken has been recognized for his leadership and expertise, including by National Law Journal, as one of its 2016 IP Trailblazers, and by Law360, as one of five 2015 Media & Entertainment MVPs. Full Bio



Joe Wetzel focuses on litigating cutting-edge copyright and music licensing issues. As a partner in our Intellectual Property, Patent, Trademark and Copyright Litigation practice, Joe represents clients in a variety of complex IP matters. For more than a decade, Joe has represented clients at the trial and appellate levels in a wide range of litigation matters, including IP and media licensing, copyright, patent, trademark, data privacy, trade secret and false advertising cases.
Joe has extensive experience with music copyright and class action litigation, and regularly counsels large and small clients on various copyright, trademark and other intellectual property matters associated with traditional and new media products and services.
A regular speaker on copyright and licensing issues faced by media companies in the performance or distribution of audio and audiovisual content, Joe has taught Music Law at the University of California Berkeley School of Law and has guest lectured at UC Hastings College of the Law and Santa Clara University School of Law.
Joe is recommended in Copyright by the 2017 Legal 500. In 2017 Law360 recognized Joe as a Rising Star for the third time and Benchmark Litigation named Joe a Future Star. In 2016, Joe appeared in the Benchmark Litigation Under 40 Hot List and was selected for The Daily Journal Top 40 Under 40 for his work in intellectual property and media and entertainment litigation issues. He has also been listed as a Northern California Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2012–2017.
