Thursday, November 5, 2015
Member Erich Carey has joined the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) as Vice President & Senior Counsel, Litigation. His role encompasses management of the NMPA’s litigation efforts and copyright royalty board proceedings as well as providing legal counsel to the NMPA’s publisher members.
Prior to joining the NMPA, Erich worked for six years as an attorney at New York City law firm Pryor Cashman LLP in the Litigation, Digital Media and Entertainment practice groups. Erich’s broad experience includes advocating for music publishers in industry-shaping litigation concerning the impact of the ASCAP and BMI consent decrees on digital music services, representing EMI Records in shutting down long-running pirate website Grooveshark and performing due diligence in connection with the sale of the EMI recorded music and music publishing catalogs to Universal Music Group and Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
Erich graduated from Amherst College and Fordham Law where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal, and received honors as the graduating student with the highest grades in intellectual property courses.
Erich’s advocacy for songwriters is founded on his own personal passion. Erich is an actively performing singer/songwriter, has recorded two albums of original material, has twice earned honorable mention in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and has performed for heads of state including former U.S. President William J. Clinton and members of Congress.
Congrats, Erich, and welcome to the DC Chapter!
