ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The pandemic has touched every aspect of our lives, and copyright is no exception. When musical performances move from in-person to live-streaming; when fitness classes take place on video screens; and when students have to get their course materials digitally instead of in print; copyright and licensing concerns arise where they didn’t—or didn’t as much—before. Our panel will explore how copyright factors into the sudden move from physical to virtual. We’ll talk about the controversies, solutions that have been devised, and the issues that counsel should be on the lookout for as the pandemic continues.


SPEAKERS:


Allison Job, Counsel, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Inc. (“JALC”) - At JALC Allison’s practice focuses on intellectual property matters where she supports the Brand, Sales & Marketing, Concerts & Touring and Education teams. Allison also leads the legal team for Blue Engine Records, JALC’s in-house record label. Allison has worked on the release of numerous albums including United We Swing featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and artists such as Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, James Taylor & John Legend.
Allison received her Masters and Bachelors of Music degrees in Double Bass from Juilliard, through the joint program with Columbia University, where she was awarded the “Artist as Citizen” Prize and the Peter Mennin Prize for outstanding leadership in Music. After graduating from Juilliard Allison performed as a freelancer in New York City and appeared with artists such as The Roots and Frank Ocean and on shows such as The Jimmy Fallon Show. Allison graduated from Fordham University School of Law, where she was a Stein Scholar in Public Interest Law and Ethics, and was awarded the Archibald R. Murray Public Service Award, Magna Cum Laude. While in law school Allison interned with WNET/New York Public Media and Take Two Interactive Software the parent company of Rockstar Games and the developer of video games such as Grand Theft Auto. Allison volunteers as the Founding and Managing Director of the Artist as Citizen Conference - a six-day conference held at The Juilliard School. The conference’s mission is to strengthen the role of the arts in our society by connecting, developing and mobilizing a more diverse, more strategic, more empowered generation of American artists by focusing on three main threads of inquiry – Artistry, Activism and Entrepreneurship.


Annie Lin,
is Senior Corporate Counsel at Twitch Interactive, Inc., which operates the leading live video streaming service Twitch. In this role, Annie leads legal efforts for Twitch’s global music initiatives and drives strategy for commercial partnerships and licensing. She has previously served as in-house counsel for Netflix’s music group, general counsel of Loudr (acquired by Spotify), and director of licensing at The Orchard, and has advised digital media companies on matters related to music and content distribution. She is a graduate of Rice University and the University of Houston Law Center. Annie has previously served as a board member of Women in Music, and currently lives in San Francisco.

 

 

Rina Elster Pantalony obtained her undergraduate degree in Political Science with Honors from Dalhousie University at Halifax, Canada and her JD from the Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University. She is admitted to practice as a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Ms. Pantalony practiced intellectual property law with the Department of Justice, Canada, as principal intellectual property counsel to the Library and Archives of Canada. Prior experience also includes an appointment as director of licensing for a joint Internet venture between The Tate, London and the Museum of Modern Art, New York and legal counsel to the Virtual Museum of Canada, an online exhibition partnership between the Canadian Heritage Information Network (CHIN) and Canada’s museums. For ten years until 2014, she was faculty in the Moving Image Archive Preservation Program at the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, where she taught courses in copyright law and policy. From 2013 until 2019, Ms. Elster Pantalony chaired the Legal Affairs Committee of the International Council of Museums and is recognized as an expert in intellectual property management for cultural heritage organizations by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Her publication, Managing Intellecual Property for Museums, a second edition, was published by WIPO in 2013. Ms. Elster Pantalony was appointed Director of Copyright Advisory Services, Columbia University in the fall of 2014.

David Oxenford (Moderator) is a partner at Wilkinson Barker Knauer LLP in Washington DC. He has represented broadcasters in Washington for over 35 years on a wide range of matters ranging from FCC regulatory issues to the purchase and sale of broadcast properties and the negotiation of programming agreements. Since the late 1990s, he also has been very active counseling broadcasters, webcasters, podcasters and other media companies on copyright issues and digital media legal issues, particularly with respect to music licensing. He has been active in Copyright Royalty Board proceedings dealing with webcasting royalties and helped negotiate the Small Webcasters Settlement Act and the Pureplay Webcasters Act more than a decade ago, as well as being involved in many more current music licensing issues. David is a regular speaker at broadcast and digital music conferences and seminars, and he is the principal writer of the Broadcast Law Blog, www.broadcastlawblog.com, which covers legal issues, including copyright issues, of importance to media companies.

 

CLE CREDIT:

The Copyright Society is a Certified CLE Provider in New York and California. Program will satisfy 1.0 CLE credit. The intermediate program is transitional and appropriate for both newly admitted and experienced attorneys.
