U.S. Copyright Office Releases Official Compendium, Third Edition

Maria A. Pallante, Register of Copyrights, has released the official version of the Compendium of U.S. Copyright Office Practices, Third Edition. It is the first major revision over twenty years.

The Third Edition includes more than 1200 pages of administrative practices and, according to the U.S. Copyright Office, "sets the stage for a number of long-term improvements" in policy.

"More than three times the size of the previous edition, the Third Edition represents a comprehensive overhaul and makes the Office’s practices and standards more accessible and transparent to the public," according to In addition to addressing fundamentals and common questions, it  includes changes to recordation practices and "contains a new Table of Authorities that lists the cases, statutory provisions, and other legal authorities cited in the Third Edition and the relevant section where each citation may be found."

Maria Pallante acknowledged the contributions of many Copyright Society Members. Member Mary Rasenberger developed and managed the revision. Other contributors include Members Robert Kasunic, Maria Strong, Christopher Reed and Robert Brauneis. The Society provided readers of draft chapters, including Members Corey Field, Kate Spelman, Laura (Lolly) GasawayJohn Jennison, Michael Donaldson, Edwin Komen, President Eric Schwartz, Nancy Wolff, Jon Baumgarten, Stephen Gillen, Andrew Berger, and E. Leonard Rubin.
