The Authors Guild is seeking a General Counsel. From the Guild:


The Authors Guild, a not-for-profit 501(c)(6) organization established in 1912, is the largest organization of professional writers in the United States. The Guild advocates for authors on issues of copyright, fair contracts, free speech, and tax fairness, and offers business and legal services to its 9,000-plus members.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the General Counsel is the chief legal advisor of the Authors Guild and its related entities (the Authors Guild Foundation, the Authors Registry, and the Authors League of America), responsible for overseeing the organization’s legal affairs, including its in-house corporate affairs, its government relations and policy initiatives, and its legal services program. In addition, the General Counsel will be responsible for developing a wide variety of the organization’s written positions, policies, statements, submissions to government agencies, and legal briefs, as well as participating in domestic and international public speaking engagements and conferences.


  • Oversee and advise on matters of corporate governance, finance, contracts, insurance, risk management, real estate, copyright, and employment;

  • Advise senior management, the Board of Directors, and other staff on legal issues relating to programmatic affairs, including legislative and regulatory issues affecting the organization;

  • Write speeches, white papers, comments to government agencies, legal briefs, press statements, member correspondence, and occasional articles for the Guild’s quarterly Bulletin;

  • Oversee the organization’s internal policy development;

  • Monitor and manage any litigation, including responding to subpoenas and working with

    outside counsel, and handling minor litigation matters in-house;

  • Participate in the ongoing strategic planning process as an integral member of the senior

    management team;

  • Develop advocacy positions with senior management and the Board of Directors;

  • Serve as a liaison with publishing industry leaders and domestic and international rights


  • Serve as staff liaison to Board of Directors litigation or other committees;

  • Oversee the organization’s direct legal services program for its members;

  • Develop and oversee internship programs;

  • Oversee the organization’s literary estates; and

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.


  • A minimum of 7 years of legal experience as a licensed attorney with admission to the New York State Bar;

  • Copyright, publishing, nonprofit, and IP practice areas highly desired;

  • Strong legal, analytical, administrative, and written and oral communication skills;

  • Ability to work independently, assess priorities, take initiative, handle multiple assignments,

    and meet deadlines;

  • Excellent research skills and the ability to synthesize information quickly with a high degree

    of accuracy and attention to detail; and

  • Experience managing in-house attorneys and outside legal counsel.
