In a time of worldwide distancing and isolation, the IAEL (International Association of Entertainment Lawyers) has come together to mount its first-ever digital IAEL Legal Summit as part of major music conference Midem.

“The IAEL has participated at Midem in Cannes for 46 years and we were determined to continue this tradition,” explains Jeff Liebenson, IAEL President. “This year, we’re excited to welcome our colleagues from around the world who will be able to join no matter where they are, free of charge. It reflects the more global nature of our work in this day and age, and marks a new milestone in our collaboration.” Complimentary registration is available here.

On Wednesday 3rd June at 10am (ET) / 4pm (CET) the IAEL will host its annual Legal Update For Entertainment & Technology. Once again, legal and sector experts will provide succinct reports on those key developments which have had a major impact on the industry this year, along with what we can be likely to expect in the next twelve months. As usual, the session will cover both media and entertainment issues as well as related technology sector developments. This year topics obviously include the impact of and reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also a full range of other newsworthy issues including: the Kraftwerk sampling case; collecting society tariffs for dance events; Skidmore v. Led Zeppelin; the Universal fire litigation; Tiktok (Douyin) v. Huopai (Baidu) and an update on the Mechanical Licensing Collective.

The Update will be followed immediately on Wednesday by the IAEL Masterclass from 11:30am (ET) which will take its usual deeper dive into one particular hot topic. Entitled Did You Steal My Song? An International Perspective this year the Masterclass will provide a timely exploration of the manner in which courts across the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union assess whether a musical work infringes upon an earlier work, including discussions of the procedures followed, the legal doctrines considered, the role of experts and the potential relief and remedies available.

Then, on Thursday 4th June at 10am (ET), the IAEL will host the IAEL Main Seminar which this year takes the theme of Nationalism v Globalism. Bringing you exclusive sneak peeks from the IAEL’s 2020-21 Book on the same topic, there will be individual presentations on Brexit and the entertainment industry, attempts at regulating fake news online, the environmental impacts of recorded music; and a panel discussion on data protection and the global effects of the European Union’s GDPR on media and entertainment; with a live Question & Answer to follow.

This year in association with DLA Piper US, IAEL will offer Continuing Legal Education credits to US licensed attorneys who attend the sessions. DLA Piper LLP (US) has been certified by the State Bar of California, the MCLE Board of the Supreme Court of Illinois, the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and the New York State Continuing Legal Education Board as an accredited CLE provider. The following CLE credit is being sought:

California: 1.5/1.0/1.5 Credit (1.5/1.0/1.5 General, 0.0 Ethics)
Illinois: 1.5/1.0/1.5 Credit (1.5/1.0/1.5 General, 0.0 Professional Responsibility)

New Jersey: 1.8/1.2/1.8 Credits (1/8/1.2/1.8 General, 0.0 Professional Responsibility)

New York: 1.5/1.0/1.5 Transitional & Non-Transitional Credit (1.5/1.0/1.5 Professional Practice)
