KATHERINE DE VOS DEVINE Appointed Exec. Director of Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center

MembKatherine de Vos Devineer Katherine de Vos Devine has been named the inaugural executive director of the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center. According to a statement from the Museum, she will provide "strategic and operational leadership for the institution as it expands its facilities and programs."

Katherine is an attorney who is working on her Ph.D. in art history at Duke University. Her doctoral research uses legal and economic theory to address the impact of copyright legislation and jurisprudence on artistic practice from the 1970s to date. She is writing her thesis on the history of transformative use as a justification for artistic appropriation, expanding on existing guidance and providing new frameworks for assessing whether or not a work of appropriation art is truly transformative.

She received her J.D. from Duke and previously worked at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, where she provided legal services to more than a hundred charities and foundations.

As its mission, the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center in Asheville, North Carolina "preserves and continues the unique legacy of educational and artistic innovation of Black Mountain College for public study and enjoyment." The original Black Mountain College was a legendary art school whose alumni included Willem and Elaine de Kooning, Robert Rauschenberg, Josef and Anni Albers, Jacob Lawrence, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Cy Twombly, Kenneth Noland, Ben Shahn, Franz Kline, Arthur Penn, Buckminster Fuller, M.C. Richards, Francine du Plessix Gray, Charles Olson, Robert Creeley and Dorothea Rockburne.
